Sometime during 2019, I called Dad and suggested we should write a book to help all those running a business, based on all the wisdom he’d imparted to me over the years. I own two successful businesses – a blog I began in 2008, that today has millions of readers, and a specialist marketing agency that works with some of the best brands in the music and audio technology industry. I know that neither would be as successful as it is now, without the wisdom Dad passed on to me over the years.

But Dad’s response was typical:

“We’d be wasting our time,” he said.

Dad was always blunt and to the point. He had all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. When he said something, he was certain of it. In fact, his certainty was unnerving (though, at the same time, strangely reassuring).

I asked him why.

The response he gave is the exact reason why I wanted to write this book. It was a moment of wisdom. Not one wrapped up in lengthy dialogue that would instantly be forgotten, but a pithy one-liner, like the hook of a great song or the punchline of a joke.

“I can’t put my head on their shoulders,” he said.

I asked him to explain, even though I almost certainly knew what he meant. He went on…

“You can give people all the advice in the world, but most of them won’t live it – and I can’t do it for them.”

He was right.

The world doesn’t need another self-help book, and if people took notice of simple wisdom, we’d need a lot less of them. Plenty of people quote those books, but they don’t actually apply the principles to their lives.

However, I believe we do need this book.

It’s full of values that will cause you and your business to thrive if you take them to heart and practice them. But it takes a blunt, no-nonsense approach to delivering the truth – just like Dad.

So here it is, the book I was told not to write, filled with one-liners of wisdom. Will you prove Dad wrong?

THANK YOU!

This book was born out of the tragic death of my father. I hope it will be a legacy that benefits all who read it!
